As a child, I often visited one of my favourite aunts. My mother’s sister lived in Tehran (the capital of Iran), and I spent summer vacations there. Traveling there and hanging out with my cousin (my best friend) was one of the highlights of my life.
We were woken up by music every morning. My uncle woke us up with harmonious melodies. I knew nothing about the therapeutic dimension of music at the time, but I really liked how I was called back to the waking dimension. It was also my uncle who taught me to swim. He also introduced me to the French writer Jules Verne and his book “Around the World in 80 Days.“
In 1872, when the book was published, traveling around the world in 80 days was pure fantasy. Today, 151 years later, only our personal economy thwarts such an adventure. What was once regarded as fantasy is now our reality.
Would those who lived in the 19th century believe that one day people could send mail to each other with the touch of a key and the person on the other end would receive the mail within seconds? Had they heard of it in ancient times, they would have just put it in the box, crazy dreams, but here we are today, and who knows where humanity will be in 151 years.
I can remember how my intellectual uncle used to talk about the future. “In the future, we will have smart roads. Maybe even roads that move while we sit still. “
It was always cool to listen to his visions of the future, and recently I read that China is and is working on developing smart roads. Nowadays, change is all around, and everything, including development, is moving faster and faster.
Travelling forward in time
I prefer to focus on traveling forward in time rather than looking back. I do that with the children at school. I ask them:
- What do you think they will read about us living now in the future?
- What do you think the future generations will remember us for?
- How will they refer to this era of human history, i.e. the period we live in now?
- What if everything we have created gets lost in digital warfare now that we depend on technology? If all our written history ends up on a digital platform, and could get lost in a digital war.

The new generations will remember us as the ones who destroyed the planet and left them in a very precarious situation. Nice article Parisa !

I agree with you. There is too much pressure on children today regarding the climate crisis. They have received the plant in its condition and are fed with so much fear because of its state and development. I see how helpless kids and youth feel; many are dealing with anxiety ( for that exact reason)
And when it comes to our planet, Pacha Mamma or mother earth, I think she will do just fine, but she will spit us, humans, out.
Thanks for your comment and for sharing, Cristiana, by the way.

It depends on who writes the history. If the Trumps, Putins, Ayatollahs, Kim Jong Uns, Xis and others get their way, this period will be celebrated as an awakening. If not, it will be remembered as a dark period.

Exactly, very good point, «It depends on who will write the history?»
I also think that this era will be remembered as what I call « The dark digital era of human history.»
Despite all the development and accessible technology, the psyche of humans is on trial, if you see what I mean? Thanks for sharing your reflections, John.

I agree. People are suffering the consequences of technologies they created without fully understand the ramifications.

I guess that is part of the mechanism of being human and human evolvement. We all have creative power and our creations are part of our evolution but we do not know where it will take us. Like now with AI. Who knows where human society Will be 151 years from now and how AI Will change societies in the future.
